A study conducted in the U.K. found that primary school children improve their math scores and concentration levels by playing online educational games, according to an article released in the BBC last month. Thirty primary school children between the ages of nine and ten, played a game called “Dr. Kawashima’s More Brain Training” game every morning for about 15 minutes before their lessons started. The game consists of several mini-games including reading tests, number challenges, memory puzzles and problem-solving exercises. At the end of the study, the children were tested in math and the results compared to a control group. Children who had played the games increased their test scores by more points than those who did not play, even though the test scores for both groups increased.

So what does this mean? With educational games popping up by various manufacturers all over the world, a trend is emerging. Combining a child’s “play” time with education, seems to have positive results. Making learning fun-as in part of a game-increases a child’s desire to learn. The repetition of playing is more enjoyable than simply working math problems over and over and the concentration needed, as well as the child’s own competitive desire to beat the game, adds to the beneficial outcome.

So is it time to buy a computer for your kid? Possibly.

Setting up a computer desk and computer in your child’s room or play room may help. Give your child his/her own space with a computer desk at the proper height for comfort. We found fully customizable computer desks at excellent prices on Versatables’ website.

A computer just for your child can also be the way to go. Giving him/her his own computer allows you, as a parent, to lock off inappropriate features like internet websites and pop-ups, and download fun games and colorful desktops and screen savers.

Customize your child’s computer work area with fun mouse pads or a mouse (Target sells a Hello Kitty mouse for under $10). Versatables’ computer desks can also be customized with shelves, speaker platforms, and locking CPU holders and cable management systems that provide a safer environment for children.

Stickers can be used to decorate the outside of the monitor and the keyboard, or use the computer and desk to create a themed room. For example, an aquatic themed room would look great with a fishbowl screensaver, or a princess-themed room could have a photo slide show of Disney’s princess characters.

When picking computer games, be sure to do your research. Many have been tested and are endorsed by schools and learning centers. Keep in mind, anyone can put out educational software, and just because it says it’s educational, doesn’t mean your child will learn from it. Choose games that are age-appropriate and that your child enjoys playing. Give your child time to play before studying, as increased blood flow to the frontal cortex (which happens during game play) can increase memory and concentration for hours afterward, making them ripe for learning.

While much of what you hear about computers and kids is negative press, keep in mind that computers allow us to do much more than we could without them and with proper parental control, they can be key in giving your child the educational edge.

Kids and games go hand in hand. They love playing them, talking about them, and finding out about new ones. Unfortunately, not all children’s games are created equal. Many of the games your child will come across have no educational value what-so-ever. In fact, many of them will actually do more harm than good!

Which is why finding education games for your kids is so crucial. Sure, you want them to have fun. But, you want them to learn a little something in the process. Unfortunately, many games call themselves “educational” when they are anything but. Just because they throw in a few primary colors and letters and numbers, does not mean that they are educational in nature. So don’t be fooled by their claims.

To find great educational games kids, you will need to do a little bit of research. Here are a few tips to finding the best games for your kids.

1.	Know what is right for your kids and skill level. Think about what they should be doing at this developmental stage, and cross reference that with the skills learned in the game. For instance, if your child is working on logic skills, try finding games and puzzles that help them explore that skill set. Sudoku, would be a good choice for children that are looking to improve their logic skills.

2.	Do they come highly recommended? Anyone can create a game and start selling copies, so you want to make sure that the game is kid and parent approved. Look for game suggestions on parenting and education sites, so that you know that you are getting the best bang for your buck.

3.	Is it fun to play? The best educational games in the world won’t do a whole lot of good, if your child doesn’t want to play it. So make sure that the game is fun to play. Always sit down with your child and play the game a few times together before letting them play on their own. This will not only help you evaluate the game, but will help make sure that your child understands the directions properly.

4.	Play together often. As with anything, the most learning usually happens when you are interacting with one another. So sit down with your child and play together! Talk about the choices that they make during the game, and have them explain why they did the things that they did. It will open up a dialog and make for a more educational experience.

Many times parents look online for educational games for their kids to play online. Some of these games can be found for free, but most of them are charge a small fee. As a teacher, you I highly recommend allowing your children to play these games as the advantages are many.

Advantages of Online Games:

Computer Technology is a requirement in many states Computer games generally do not require additional resources Most computer games only require an internet connection Computer games support the curriculum found in the classroom

Benefits of Online Games for Preschoolers
When preschool children are exposed to online games, the results are phenomenal. The vivid pictures combined with words allow children to phonics without them even realizing it. Talk about learning reading skills while having fun

Math sites are even more numerous. Cute little animal characters bee bop around the screen offering kids all kinds of incentives to play. Many math sites are aimed at children from 2 to 5 years old. While this may sound young to you, it is a perfect age. Kids have the hand eye coordination to move a mouse and click a button. The characters sing and dance away, encouraging them to count along.

Benefits of Online Games for Middle School
My middle school students have sat there and played Sudoku and that race car game for hours. (It was after a standardized test.) Granted, they did not have much else to do in class but they also did not complain either. They often ask to go to these sites and play the games.

While the math games are more popular for middle school students, some kids really like the science games. It really depends on the kid’s interest. I have seen kids really get into stock market games and business games. There is one online game site that has kids building elaborate empires. It is completely free and they do everything from running factories and building web pages.

Downloads for the iPod

If you have a teen in your house, you have definitely heard about iPod apps. It may be worth considering letting your pre-teen, teen or tween download a few education games for the iPod. There are a couple of free games and a few games that you can get for a fee that are educational.

Many of the iPod games are just like the online versions except smaller. You won’t get as many levels and the graphics aren’t quite as good.

If you are getting it for your toddler, I would check out of the free version first. Oftentimes, you can find a “Lite” version of the games. These are super simple versions that only have a 5-minute trial or just one level.

In any case, educational games are out there and are worth checking out. Look around and you will see.

Children’s Magazines are great for a child’s education and extending their interest over a period of time. The Internet has long been the ultimate magazine index for elementary and middle-school students, but there are some great web sites which are brand new and extend this facility still further!
ChildTopia is a toy/game for children. They will enjoy taking out the chips, shuffling them and re-loading them. The track gives the games a magical quality where new letters appear in the windows by moving the chips.

Children love good educational computer games because they are interesting and fun. What they don’t usually realize is that they get smarter each time they play these games.

But do always ensure that there are plenty of good books available for them to read. Encourage children to read through the many books they have available and to can get help with words they are stuck on. One way is use to use fun gadget called a Tag Pen.
When you are with children be sure to ask them leading questions about themselves, when they are receptive to discussion. Children love talking about themselves and this is a great way to talk to your child, and help them learn about their own capabilities.

Teachers are encouraged to make their own quizzes for students and get scores by email. Teachers should bring their students by for some online learning and fun. You can even download Funbrain games to your computer so the kids can access them anytime. Teachers are catered for by support material for the objectives of the national curriculum regarding speaking and listening. There is nothing like a good competition to get children motivated, so do dream one up and get them to enter. Some businesses provide monetary support, and one example is supermarket offers of educational grants for computers in schools based upon shop loyalty points schemes. You’ll also find details of the monetary awards which BT makes available to schools on their web site.

Online education that combines instruction with fun learning games for children creates interactive learning and enjoyment. Learning games can help students concentrate on language arts, math, science, and social studies skills through an entertaining online curriculum.

Be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water if you criticize electronic games for kids, or even ban them from your children, because the right ones can provide a very positive educational experience.

Educators have long taken advantage of children’s passion for games, and especially for computer games. The usual approach is to overlay some educational content onto a familiar game format. Educational computer games must be played in an entertaining way.

A type of game that easily combines amusement and learning are strategy games. Educational experts have always known that learning is most effective when students enjoy the experience, and even more so when it is interactive.

Therefore it was to be expected that educational innovators would harness the immense popularity of electronic games for kids to learning, and no bad thing that they are.

Students can be introduced to the common technological tools, techniques and styles in computer games development. Activities will include how to modify classic computer games as well as design and develop original computer games. Students had four computer periods per week with electronic games. The computer room was also full during lunch periods and many students stayed for two hours or more after school.

Children learn eye hand coordination and mental strategy through the right choice of games. Some are even educational and they can learn about history and culture as in the age of empire game.

Children are becoming addicted to the games, it is often said, and “they are into it body and soul.” It might also be added that; “Their body language is tremendous and shows how well they concentrate everything the have upon zapping the enemy and that is why electronic games for kids are so popular. “

There’s nothing constructive in those games beyond developing an ability to concentrate.

But, there are also still many other good electronic games for kids which are also educational video games, but the kind the kids like most tend to be the kind they are about Martians coming in that ‘have to be killed’, and so forth.

This is why parental guidance and involvement expecially with young children is absolutely essential, to guide the you and give the child “values” by which they will in future be able to moderate their on use of the internet and their use of computers generally.
