Falling Shapes Game for Children

All parents have moments when they’re home with their young child and the cute bundle of joy runs up to them and screams, “Play with me!” and the parent stands there drawing a blank. Mom looks around the room and can’t think of anything to do. The child starts to get antsy and begins to whine. Finally mom decides to take the child shopping which in the end proves to be a bad idea.

Instead of enduring yet another shopping excursion, next time you could create your own game by using some simple items you can find in your home.

The educational game is called Falling Shapes.

Items needed:

4 pieces of paper (per 2 player)

2 pencils or pens

Crayons of any color

Instructions to Create Game Pieces

Create 32 Shape Cards:

Take 2 pieces of paper and cut them each into 16 squares. You will have 32 cards total, 16 per player. The easy way to do this is to fold the paper in half and cut on the fold line. Then fold again and cut and continue until you have 16 even pieces. Do the same with the second piece of paper.

Give each person 16 cards. You and your child should draw the following shapes on your cards. Only draw 1 shape per card. You should have 2 cards that have 1 square on each, 2 cards that have 1 circle on each and so on.

2 Squares

2 Circles

2 Ovals

2 Rectangles

2 Stars

2 Triangles

2 Hearts

Create Score Sheet:

Take the other 2 pieces of blank paper and draw the same shapes listed above on each sheet. There should be 16 shapes on each piece of paper. 2 Squares, 2 Circles etc… The shapes can be drawn in random places as long as there are 16 total.

Have fun coloring your cards and score sheet before you play the game. This will allow you to spend more time on the project and enjoy doing a craft before playing.

Game Instructions

Place your individual score sheets in front of you and your child. Place a writing utensil on the table or floor next to both score sheets. Each player should hold the 16 shape cards in their hand. When you say, “Go” both you and your child should take the first card off the top of each of your card piles and hold that card above your heads. Then drop the card and watch it fall to the table or ground.

If a player’s shape card lands with the shape up then they get a point and should circle or color that shape on their score sheet. If the shape lands face down then that player doesn’t get a point. Place the dropped cards in a discard pile. Continue holding up and dropping each card and marking your score sheets. When you’ve dropped all 16 cards the game is over.

Winner

The player with the most shapes circled on the score sheet is the winner.

This game is fun for all ages and it’s a great way to teach young children about shapes.

Exciting Educational Games For Children

by admin, under Educational Learning Games

The training of the physical co-ordinations of children is most naturally accomlished through the medium of games.

It should be fully appreciated by teachers, parents and superintendents that the playing of these games is not “mere play,” but definite training of the best kind. In many cases there is little else to be done.

Here are some games that you can try.

BASEBALL BOWLING : MATERIAL

Two dozen bright colored blocks, six colored baseballs. Colors: Red, blue and yellow.

Draw a chalk circle three feet in diameter ; make a starting line fifteen feet from the circle.

Place the blocks on end inside the circle, not too closely together.

Call upon a child, have her stand on starting line and bowl the balls one at a time, endeavoring to knock down as many blocks as possible.

Continue the exercise in this way having the children play in turn.

Choose one child to pick up the fallen blocks, and another to pick up scattered balls.

OBJECT

To develop sureness of aim; attention; natural activity.

SILENCE PERIOD

It is very important that a period of silence be maintained from three to five minutes during one hour classes.

Have the children sit with arms folded and knees close together, each child erect in his seat. Have perfect quiet in the classroom.

Do not allow the silence to become tense and strained, the object of the exercise is tranquillity and rest.

Teachers will find after a period of silence children lose their restlessness and concentrate more readily.

OBJECT

Rest; attention; tranquillity.

BLOCK PLACING : MATERIAL

Wooden blocks of one color, according to number of children playing.

Make a line of small chalk crosses on the floor twelve inches between each cross ; draw a starting line parallel with crosses, eighteen feet between.

Give each child a block and have them stand in position on starting line.

At a given signal have children run and place their blocks each on one of the crosses; they then run back to starting line.

The blocks must be placed on end upon the crosses; should a block fall, the child must place it upright again.

This exercise may be repeated three or four consecutive times.

OBJECT

Muscular control; attention; to stimulate the spirit of play; voluntary activity.

COLOR EXERCISE : MATERIAL

Six bright colored balls two red, two blue, two yellow.

Place three balls on the table, one of eacK color, teacher holding the duplicates.

Hold up the red ball that all may see it, and call upon A to pick out ball of same color on the table. When A has picked out red ball, teacher should then hold up blue ball, and call upon B to find duplicate. Do not call the balls by color name.

The child will develop color sense more quickly if name of color is omitted at this period of training.

OBJECT

Color sense ; attention ; independent thought.

Educational games – How they can help your children?

by admin, under Educational Learning Games

Educational games are becoming very popular these days. The internet has opened up a vast Pandoraâ??s box where users can do so many tasks like sending mails, chat with friends, watch movies, listen to music, do your banking, pay your bills etc., and now itâ??s possible to play games online. The web is a great place where you can search for educational games for your children. Children benefit greatly from playing such games as they forget they are actually learning a subject. Most children take a dislike to subjects like math, geography, science and social studies etc. Children want to have fun all the time and when they are burdened with studies they become remorse and instantly take a dislike for the subject. A subject like math is never liked by most children. The very idea of adding and subtracting numbers becomes painful. However when math is made interesting by using animation then it becomes really interesting.

This applies to other subjects like science, history and geography too. Developers of games have realized this huge potential of getting children interested in these subjects through educational games. The educational games contain lots of graphics and are very interactive. Educational games are not only fun, they help your children to learn. Playing violent video games can be harmful but not educational games. When your children begin playing these games, you will find that their interest in the subject begins to increase. They become attentive and show a keen interest to know more about the subject.

Fun Counting and Math Games for Children

by admin, under Educational Learning Games

Whether you have a 2 year old who is just starting to learn numbers or a 10 year old that knows subtraction or addition, it is never too early or too late to learn about counting or math games. Children that are young benefit from games that teach them how to count objects and recognize numbers whereas older children benefit from games that help them learn how to add and subtract and build the basis for learning about algebra.

Aside from the obvious board games where you roll the dice and move your game piece a certain number of spaces, there are plenty of other counting games that you can play. Dominoes can keep kids busy for hours. I recently spent over 1 hour playing with dominoes with my two year old. We counted the numbers of dots. We counted the dominos as we stacked them or put them in or out of the container. We lined them up and counted them together. After they were all lined up, I let him push the first domino to make them all fall down.

Hide things in your house such as blocks, plastic eggs or marbles. Before you hide them, count them with your child. Then, they can go find them all. Once they have been found, they can count them again to make sure that they have all been found. Older kids can add or subtract to figure out how many they have left to find. In order to encourage sharing, have two or more children hunt the objects. At the end of the hunt, count the number in each kid’s bucket. Then work together to make sure that everyone has the same amount in their bucket.

Drop objects in a bucket or plastic containers that are lined up next to each other. Count how many objects are in each bucket. Count the number of objects that did not make it into a container. Once again, take the opportunity to incorporate addition or subtraction with older children.

Young children love learning about eyes, ears, fingers, toes, etc. Count body parts together. For instance ask, “How many eyes does Mommy have?” or “How many fingers do you have?” Count familiar household items such as pets, shoes or pots and pans.

Children also love to eat snacks, so incorporate counting with snack time. Ask “How many Cheerios do you have?” or “How many Goldfish are in the blue cup? How many are in the red cup?” Count out snacks to make sure each child has the same amount. If one child has two more Cheerios than another one, teach them to give the other child one of their’s so that they have the same amount.

Be creative in teaching your child to count. They love to count and learn, but they also want to have fun too. It is possible to incorporate both in daily activities. Lead by example and show them how you count things. You don’t want to have them counting and reciting numbers all day long, but at the same time there are so many opportunities to help them learn their numbers. Work with your children to come up with your own fun games and counting activities.

Educational Games for Children

by admin, under Educational Learning Games

Educational games for children these days abound on the internet. Educational games strictly speaking are games that are specifically designed for educational purposes.  However generically they can be any games that enable people to learn.  Educational games typically teach children and adults alike a variety of subjects. They enable people to expand concepts and general knowledge. These games include board, card, and video games.

Educational games for children are often overlooked by parents.   Some parents consider that playing computer games is an exercise in mindless babble.  Indeed computer games have well and truly received more than a fair share of criticism over the years with parents considering them a waste of time.  Many parents are also very concerned with their children having any attachment to internet use.  In the past even children have considered educational games a waste of their time. They have been been considered boring and lacking interesting aspects.

Even older children have seen many of the online educational games as merely for preschoolers.  Fortunately this attitude has been gradually changing as many parents and older children themselves have gradually drifted towards many of the more exciting and stimulating online games that teach children life skills and general knowledge subjects.   More and more the working world is using digital technology and for children to play games online they become conversant with the new age in which they are growing up.

More recent research has discovered that many modern games for children have sufficient educational content to be warranted with the curriculum of schools. Modern schools are certainly introducing educational games into their teaching model for  their students.  Even action games are now considered important in developing a child’s mind and ability to react quickly to various circumstance.  Strategy games such as sim city where children need to develop their environment and build societies of people develop a child’s ability to think strategically and plan their futures.  Educational games certainly empower teachers to introduce concepts to children in a more stimulating and student based class room.  With computer assisted software teachers can encourage their students to develop their communication, social, interpersonal, critical thinking, problem solving and knowledge based skills.

This does not mean that anything should be passed off as being an valuable educational game.  As these games are developed it is important for developers to regulate their game content.  A game developer for children needs to be fully aware of his customer base.  He needs to have a broad understanding of child development and learning processes.  He needs to create a balance between educational and entertainment that is consistent with the age level and social development of children.  It is also useful for developers to be aware of the general school syllabus. What are children learning at the different stages of their up bringing.

Although some educational games for children need to be purchased it should not overlooked that many corporate concerns also have set up great websites for children. At these websites children can gain access to a lot of free games and some of these are even better than those that you can pay for.  Nevertheless paid sites should not be overlooked either because there is still much value in purchasing some higher quality games for children.
